UPSC has invited applications for 80 permanent Group A Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner (APFC) posts in EPFO, and the Recruitment Test is on December 20, 2026. The Enforcement Officer/Accounts Officer (EO/AO) posts are not part of this cycle. APFC sits at Pay Level 10, with a starting basic pay of ₹56,100.

UPSC EPFO 2026 Notification: Vacancies, Dates and EO/AO Status

UPSC has notified 80 APFC vacancies for 2026. EPFO withdrew its request for 311 EO/AO vacancies on 8 June 2026, so there is no EO/AO recruitment in this cycle.

The application window is now closed. If you did not apply, your next chance is the next UPSC EPFO notification.

If you want EO/AO, EPFO has to send UPSC a fresh request first. Until that happens, nothing is scheduled. Watch the "Recruitment" section of upsc.gov.in.

The category-wise split of the 80 posts (General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS and PwBD) is given in the detailed notification PDF.

UPSC EPFO APFC Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Relaxation

You need a bachelor's degree from a recognised university and must be within the age limit. The maximum age is 35 years for General and EWS candidates, counted on the last date of application. Reserved categories get extra years.

Qualification

  • Essential: a bachelor's degree from a recognised university.

  • The notification also lists some desirable qualifications. They are a plus, not a must.

Age limit by category

Relaxation

OBC (non-creamy layer)

3 years

38

SC / ST

5 years

40

PwBD

10 years over the category limit

45 (General), 48 (OBC), 50 (SC/ST)

These are the standard Government of India relaxations. Ex-servicemen and government employees have separate rules, so read the age clause in the notification.

Example: An OBC (non-creamy layer) candidate born in 1989 turned 37 in 2026. The age was counted on 11 September 2026, so this candidate was within the 38-year limit.

Fee: Reported as ₹25, with exemption for women, SC, ST, and PwBD candidates. Confirm this in the official notification, as sites differ on small details.

UPSC EPFO Exam Pattern 2026: Marks, Negative Marking and Selection Process

Selection has two stages: a Recruitment Test (RT) and an interview. The RT carries 300 marks, and the interview carries 100. The final merit list uses 75% of the RT score and 25% of the interview score.

Stage

Mode

Marks

Weight in final result

Recruitment Test

Pen-and-paper, objective MCQs

300

75%

Interview (Personality Test)

In person

100

25%

The test has 120 questions, and each question carries 2.5 marks. Only candidates who clear the RT cut-off get an interview call.

Negative marking: UPSC EPFO tests have used a one-third deduction for each wrong answer in past cycles. Confirm this in the 2026 notification. If it applies, a wrong answer costs about 0.83 marks.

What this means for you: With four options, a blind guess has zero expected gain. Guess only when you can remove at least one option. If you can remove one, your chance of being right rises to one in three, and the guess becomes worth taking.

UPSC EPFO APFC Syllabus 2026: What Changed and What to Prioritise

The syllabus has one big change: Labour Laws has been replaced by Labour Codes. Reports on the notification say the rest of the syllabus stays the same as before.

The syllabus covers about ten areas: General English, Indian Freedom Struggle, current events, developmental issues, Indian Polity and Economy, general accounting principles, industrial relations and labour laws, general science and computers, general mental ability and quantitative aptitude, and social security in India. Check the exact wording in the notification.

Labour Codes replace Labour Laws

India merged 29 central labour laws into four Codes. All four came into force on November 21, 2025. Learn the four Codes by name:

  1. Code on Wages, 2019

  2. Industrial Relations Code, 2020

  3. Code on Social Security, 2020

  4. Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020

The Code on Social Security matters most for an EPFO exam, because it covers provident fund, pension and insurance schemes. One law-firm note says the repeal of the EPF Act, 1952 itself was held back, so study the Code and the EPF Act side by side.

Old notes on the Payment of Wages Act, Industrial Disputes Act or similar laws are now outdated. Update them using the Codes.

UPSC APFC Salary 2026: In-Hand Pay After NPS, DA and HRA

APFC is a Pay Level 10 post. The basic pay starts at ₹56,100. The pay band in this level runs up to ₹1,77,500, but that is the highest basic pay, not take-home pay. One estimate puts the in-hand salary near ₹1 lakh a month in a metro, after NPS and income tax. In smaller cities the figure is lower.

From basic pay to in-hand pay

  1. Basic pay: ₹56,100 at entry.

  2. Dearness Allowance (DA): Added on basic pay. The government revises the rate twice a year, so check the current rate.

  3. House Rent Allowance (HRA): Depends on your city.

  4. Transport Allowance (TA): Added as per city and level rules.

  5. Deductions: NPS (10% of basic plus DA) and income tax.

HRA on ₹56,100 basic pay

City type

HRA rate

HRA per month

X (large metros)

30%

₹16,830

Y

20%

₹11,220

Z

10%

₹5,610

These HRA rates follow the 7th Pay Commission structure. The DA rate changes, so your exact take-home depends on it. Do not rely on sites that call ₹1,77,500 an "in-hand" figure.

Example: Two APFCs earn the same basic pay. One is posted in a metro and the other in a Z-class city. The metro officer gets about ₹11,000 more HRA each month. That gap explains why take-home pay varies by posting.

Other benefits: Government job security, NPS pension, medical benefits, and leave rules. APFC officers can move up to Regional Provident Fund Commissioner and higher posts through promotions. Promotion timing depends on vacancies and service rules.

How to Prepare for UPSC EPFO in the Time Left (Before 20 December)

You can build a solid base in about nine weeks if you follow a fixed plan. Study the high-priority sections first and take full mock tests from week five. The plan below uses eight weeks and leaves one spare week for revision slips.

8-week plan

Weeks

Focus

Daily target

1-2

Read the syllabus and the four Labour Codes; start accounting basics

4–5 hours

3-4

Polity, Economy, social security schemes; practise maths and reasoning

5–6 hours

5-6

Current events, English, remaining topics; start sectional tests

5–6 hours

7-8

Full-length mocks twice a week; review mistakes

6 hours

Spare week

Revise short notes; do not start new topics

Light revision

Tips

  • Write one-page notes for each Code and each EPFO scheme.

  • After every mock, list your wrong answers and the reason for each.

  • Practise the guess rule: skip a question if you cannot remove any option.

  • Keep the last three days for revision only.

Previous-year papers and cutoff trends

Solving old papers shows you the question style and difficulty. Papers from the 2017, 2021, 2023, and 2025 cycles are available, so start with the latest ones. Questions on labour laws in older papers still help with concepts, but update the facts to the Labour Codes.

UPSC publishes cut-off marks after results. Look at the category-wise cut-offs in UPSC's final result notices, and track the trend over two or three cycles instead of trusting a single number from a coaching site.

Resources

  • The official upsc.gov.in notification and syllabus (read it fully).

  • The EPFO website for schemes, rules, and circulars.

  • The text and summaries of the four Labour Codes from the Ministry of Labour and Employment and PIB.

  • A standard book or class notes for accounting basics.

  • A daily newspaper and PIB for current events.

  • A good mock test series for the last four weeks.
